Rosacea is a skin condition that is often referred to as acne rosacea, as it can look quite similar to acne. However, the condition actually differs from acne quite significantly, and you need to take this into account when seeking out treatment options.
Exposure to the sun has been linked to an increase in rosacea symptoms, meaning that you are best avoiding direct sunlight as much as you can. When you do need to be in the sun, a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30 is essential, as is a wide-brimmed hat to give your face some extra protection.
Identifying Your Triggers
There are a number of different rosacea triggers out there, and everybody’s skin will react in its own way to each trigger. The best way to prevent your symptoms from flaring up is by identifying your own rosacea triggers, whether this may be spicy food, extreme temperatures or stress. Once you have pinpointed these, you can then try your best to avoid them as much as possible.
Those who suffer from severe cases of rosacea may often need to turn to medication to help control the symptoms. These usually tend to be a course of antibiotics, and can also include a topical antibiotic that you would apply directly to your face. However, keep in mind that although these long-term medications may be able to reduce rosacea symptoms, including the rosacea acne, they can often take a couple of months to actually have an effect, and the results will not be permanent.
Intense Pulsed Light Treatment
Intense pulsed light treatment has been proven to be quite effective when it comes to a long-term solution for rosacea, especially if redness and flushing are your main symptoms. This treatment targets the blood vessels within your skin, warming them to the extent that they burst. This then leads to the blood vessel re-modelling itself in the weeks that follow, with around 80% of rosacea sufferers finding some success with this method.
It is now believed that rosacea is caused by inflammation within the skin’s own immune system, with rosacea patients tending to experience an increase in the production of cathelecidin. This is a chemical that causes spots, as well as redness and skin damage, but can be treated with anti-inflammatory skin care ingredients, such as aloe vera and coconut oil.
Unfortunately, there is no permanent cure for rosacea acne, and there is also nothing that you can do to prevent the condition from arising in the first place. However, by having some effective management techniques in place, you will be able to stay on top of your condition, and have full control over flare-ups.
