BEAT CELLULITE WITH THESE SIMPLE TIPS

Beautiful Naked Woman Wrapping Herself in Blanket

Cellulite is caused when fat cells within the body accumulate and expand beneath the skin, pushing against the tissue and resulting in an uneven appearance. While cellulite is most commonly found on the thighs, buttocks and arms, it can occur anywhere on the body, but there are a few ways in which you can try to beat it for good.

Regular Exercise

One of the most effective ways to beat cellulite is by stimulating your lymphatic system, as this is what is responsible for draining your body of toxins. When your lymphatic system is running optimally, it is able to prevent any fibrous tissues from hardening under the skin, which stops cellulite’s dreaded dimples from appearing. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to keep your lymphatic system stimulated, with research showing that exercise, and breathing heavily, can increase lymph activity by between 10 and 30 times its resting rate.

Body Brushing

Dry body brushes are widely available, and while it may add on a few extra minutes to your daily skin care routine, the results will be more than worth it. A body brush should be used on dry skin, just before you shower, with circular motions that begin at the ankles and work their way up to the heart. Body brushing has many benefits, including a boost to blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, which, as mentioned above, is great for banishing cellulite.

Drink the Right Amount of Water

Water is essential when it comes to keeping your skin healthy, as this prevents your cellulite from storing toxins. By keeping your body adequately hydrated, it will then be able to flush out toxins effectively, leading to smoother, healthier skin. However, drinking too much water can cause swelling underneath your cellulite, exacerbating the problem, so try to stick to around 1.5 litres a day.

Stabilize Hormones

Your hormones are largely responsible for the formation of cellulite, especially the female hormone oestrogen, which encourages your body to store excess fat around your hips, buttocks and thighs. For those who have higher-than-average oestrogen levels, cellulite can be an annoying side effect of this, but, fortunately, there are many ways in which you can work to stabilize your hormone levels. Foods from the brassica family, which includes kale, broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower, contain the nutrients needed to detoxify oestrogen molecules, while also providing a boost to liver detoxification. Foods from the allum family, which includes onions, garlics, leeks and chives, are also great for this, as they contain a number of amino acids, as well as quercetin, a powerful antioxidant.

Cellulite can be extremely frustrating to deal with, and while there may be many cellulite-busting creams out there, many of these will not have the effect that you desire. Instead, try to beat your cellulite from within, working on boosting your lymphatic system, as well as your body’s natural detoxification process, as this will give you long-lasting results.

GOOD HYGIENE IS THE BEST SKIN CARE

Woman Holding Pink Flower

Maintaining healthy and happy skin does not need to be complicated, as all you need to really do is practice good hygiene. From keeping your environment clean to washing your face each night, these hygiene tips, when followed consistently, will have a noticeably positive effect on your skin.

Change Your Pillowcase Every Other Day

Changing your bedding once a week is usually adequate, but the skin on your face is much more delicate than the skin on your body, leaving it far more susceptible to bacteria. Try to change your pillowcase every other day, as this will go such a long way in bringing you the clear complexion you have always wanted.

Keep Your Environment Clean

In addition to ensuring that your bed linen is always clean, you should also pay attention to the environment around you. Everything from your mobile phone to your sofa can carry unbelievable amounts of bacteria and germs, all of which are transferred onto your skin each time you come into contact with them. Begin by making a note of every single surface that your skin comes into contact with, and then come up with a new cleaning routine that takes them all into account.

Cleanse Each Night

Over the day, so much dirt, bacteria, sweat and more ends up building up on the surface of your skin, and, unless these are washed away, they will only end up settling into your pores and causing so many unwanted issues. Use a mild cleanser that will not irritate your skin, and make sure to thoroughly cleanse your face each evening before you go to bed. Once done, gently pat your skin with a towel until it is still damp, and not dry, and then apply a layer of moisturizer. Doing this over damp skin will help to trap in the excess moisture, keeping your skin hydrated. While many people do cleanse in the morning as well, over-cleansing can also lead to problems, so as long as you are cleansing before you go to bed, and are sleeping on clean bedding, simply washing with water in the mornings should be adequate.

Use a Separate Towel for Your Face

Towels are known for harbouring bacteria, which is one reason why you should have separate face and body towels. In addition to this, body towels are also usually of a rougher texture, and this is far too harsh for the delicate skin on your face.

While obtaining a healthy, natural glow can often seem quite complex, you can easily nurture a smooth and clear complexion just by practicing good hygiene. If you implement each of these tips, while continuing on with your usual skin care routine, you will no doubt begin to notice some improvements in your skin’s health very soon.

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

beautiful woman looking at camera

Just about every skin care product out there is formulated for a specific skin type, meaning that unless you know what your skin type is, you are likely using products that are not best suited to your skin. While everybody’s skin is definitely unique, there are a few ways in which you can determine your overall skin type so that you can then learn how to better care for it.

Examine Your Skin After Cleansing

A simple way to begin to determine your skin type is to first cleanse your skin thoroughly, using a mild cleanser, and then gently pat it dry. Rather than applying any other products afterwards, leave your skin bare, and then examine your cheeks, chin, nose and forehead after half an hour, to see if any oil has built up. Do this again after an additional thirty minutes, making a few different facial expressions to assess whether or not your skin feels tight, dry, patchy or oily. If you have just a small amount of shine on your forehead or nose, you likely have normal or combination skin, while those who have quite a bit of shine, on the cheeks as well, would be classed as oily. If your skin feels quite dry, then this would point towards a dry skin type.

Use a Blotting Sheet

You can also use a blotting sheet to try to determine your skin type. All you need to do is gently pat a blotting paper over different arts of your face, holding it up to the light each time to see how much oil you have managed to blot off. If there is barely any oil, this would mean your skin is dry, whereas if you have picked up a bit of oil from your forehead and nose, this would be normal or combination. If your blotting paper comes away saturated with oil each time, then this would indicate that your skin type is oily.

Examine Your Pores

Taking a close look at your pores is another way to gain a better understanding of your skin type. Those who have normal skin tend to have pores that are barely noticeable, while those who have oily skin usually have larger pores, and these will often end up clogged due to the excess oil that is being produced. Those with dry skin would have small pores that often feel quite tight, whereas those with combination skin tend to have larger pores around the nose, but smaller pores around the cheeks and other areas of the face.

Once you have worked out what your skin type is, this will enable you to then give your skin a much higher level of care. Each skin type needs to be looked after in a different way, so make sure that the products and techniques that you are using are tailored to your skin’s exact requirements.

ACHIEVING RADIANT, HEALTHY SKIN

Young Blonde Woman with Beautiful Skin Posing with Tree

A healthy, radiant complexion can often seem impossible to obtain, but this really does not need to be the case. From exfoliation to nutrition, here are a few tips to help you to achieve the skin of your dreams.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation is essential when it comes to a healthy complexion, and the key here is to be consistent when it comes to the amount that you exfoliate. Exfoliation sloughs away the dead skin cells that settle on the surface of the skin, which hugely contribute to a rough and dull complexion. This allows the fresh, young skin cells beneath to be revealed, while speeding up cell turnover, which is the rate at which new skin cells are created. There are a number of different methods of exfoliation, each with its own set of advantages, so even if one method has not worked for you, try researching the others to find what works best for your skin.

Brighten Up

While exfoliation is great for removing dead skin cells, the fresh skin cells underneath can also often do with a bit of a boost. There are many ingredients that can help with brightening the skin, but vitamin C is one of the best, as this can help with everything from age spots to sun damage. Vitamin C can be found in many different products, from serums to moisturizers, but try to choose one that combines it with other antioxidants for maximum benefit.

Hydration

Hydrated skin cells look plump and fresh, while dehydrated ones take on a dull, dry appearance. Even if you do not feel as though your body is dehydrated, it is extremely possible that your skin could do with a boost of hydration. To begin with, ensure that your body is sufficiently hydrated from within, by drinking plenty of water and eating a diet that is high in moisture-rich foods. You should also be hydrating your skin from the outside, using a hydrating moisturizer and hydrating facial masks at night.

Nutrition

The ingredients that you put into your body have a direct impact on the health of your skin, and while a healthy and balanced diet is key to radiant skin, there are certain skin-boosting foods in particular that you could be eating more of. Blueberries are one of these, as this antioxidant-rich fruit is bursting with vitamin A and C, and can help to clear acne and uneven patches on the skin. Kiwis are great for preventing wrinkles, while dark chocolate with a high flavenol content can keep skin hydrated while protecting it from sun damage. Salmon is another food that is great to add to your diet, as it is extremely rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which really nourish the skin, while avocados can really help when it comes to anti-aging.

A radiant, glowing complexion does not come naturally to many people, and does require a bit of work. From keeping your skin constantly hydrated to knowing which foods to eat, these tips are easy to follow and will make a huge difference to the health of your skin.

DEALING WITH BACNE

Woman Washing Back in Bathtub

Acne can form just about anywhere on the body, apart from the hands and the feet, as these two areas do not have any sebaceous glands, which are the glands that are responsible for oil production. When it comes to back acne, also referred to as bacne, this is something that may keep reoccurring throughout life, but there are a number of ways in which you can effectively deal with it to keep it under control.

A Bacne Body Wash

The majority of products that contain bacne-fighting ingredients tend to come in the form of body washes and scrubs, as it is much harder to reach over and apply spot treatments to your back. When it comes to key ingredients, keep an eye out for benzoyl peroxide, or salicylic acid, and leave these cleansers on for a few minutes before washing them off, as this will give them enough time to work their magic.

Keep Those Pores Unclogged

Clogged pores will quickly lead to bacne, which is why it is important to keep your pores unclogged as much as possible, as prevention is always the best option. This means opting for lighter lotions on your back rather than thick creams, and flipping your hair to the front when shampooing and conditioning, so that the residue does not end up settling into your skin. If you use oils on your back, make sure to take a shower, or step into a sauna, afterwards, as this will help to melt the oil away rather than having them clog up your pores.

Shower After Sweating

Whether you have just taken a long walk in the heat of summer, or have finished your daily workout, it is extremely important that you shower whenever you have been sweating. While this may be inconvenient at times, washing away your sweat, and then changing into loose clothes, will really help to air your skin out and prevent breakouts.

A Bacial

While a facial may be able to help with breakouts on your face, a bacial targets your back, and is a treatment that is becoming increasingly popular. This will allow a trained dermatologist to gain a deeper understanding of the causes of your bacne, and they will then be able to prescribe a tailor-made treatment plan for you, not only in terms of topical treatments, but also useful advice when it comes to diet and lifestyle, as both of these can have a huge effect on bacne.

The pores on your back are much larger than the pores on your face, which is why bacne is so common, as this area is extremely susceptible to experiencing clogs. While bacne may be extremely frustrating, there are several ways in which you can keep it under control, as well as preventing breakouts from occurring in the first place.

SMOOTH SKIN FOR SUMMER

Lady having her skin professionally cared for

When it comes to smooth skin and hair removal, shaving and waxing are usually the two most popular choices. However, there are actually a number of other options out there, from electrolysis to laser hair removal, all of which have their own set of advantages.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal involves the use of a laser light to destroy hair roots, and it tends to be a permanent method for many people. Since the laser is designed to detect pigment, this hair removal technique works best on those who have darker hairs with lighter skin, as it is not that effective on blonde hairs, and can often burn darker skin. While there are at-home options available, most people tend to have laser hair removal carried out professionally, which takes about six to twelve sessions to complete.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is another permanent method of hair removal, and, unlike laser hair removal, you would only need around four to six sessions of this, although the exact number does depend on everything from hair density to hormones. This technique makes use of a tiny needle that sends a shortwave radio frequency to each hair follicle, and therefore destroys them. This is an effective method that works on just about every hair and skin color, no matter how fine your hair may be. One of the main downsides to electrolysis is the pain level, and although this does vary between individuals, depending on your own personal pain threshold, a mild topical anaesthetic is often used.

Sugaring

Sugaring is a traditional hair removal method that makes use of a sugar wax, meaning that it works in a similar way to regular waxing. However, there are a number of advantages to sugaring, with one of them being the way in which the sugar wax can be used at room temperature, rather than having to be significantly heated up, which saves the skin from damage. In addition to this, sugar wax only attaches itself to individual hairs, rather than the entire top layer of skin, saving your skin from being pulled off along with the wax. All of this means that the side effects to sugaring are minimal, and the burning, redness and ingrown hairs that are often experienced with regular waxing are nowhere to be seen. However, unlike the other two methods mentioned above, sugaring is not permanent, and you are likely to need a session every four to six weeks in order to keep hair growth down.

There are so many different hair removal methods out there, and the one that you choose should depend on a number of different factors. From the part of your body that you are removing hair from, to your hair color and thickness, to your pain threshold, all of these factors should play a part in your choice of hair removal methods.

AGE GRACEFULLY WITH THESE CELEBRITY TIPS

Close-Up of Young Woman in Field

There are many celebrities out there who seem to never age, and each one will have their own anti-aging skin care secrets. From exercise to dietary supplements, here are a few tips from flawless celebrities on how to age gracefully, and slowly.

Jennifer Lopez

When it comes to aging gracefully, Jennifer Lopez’s secret is her diet, and this is something that she is hugely committed to, to the point where she has recently launched her own wellness brand, which focuses on supplements and protein shakes. Diet is so important when it comes to aging, as the foods that you eat have a direct impact on the rate at which, as well as the way in which, a person ages. Try to stick to a diet that is high in whole and fresh foods, rather than processed, as this will give your body the nutrients it needs to stay youthful.

Julie Bowen

Modern Family star Julie Bowen is another celebrity that seems to look younger the older that she gets, and her secret is exercise, running in particular. Bowen states that, no matter where she is, she always makes time each day for a 45 minute run, and this daily physical activity has been scientifically proven to be able to have a huge impact on aging.

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman is known for her beautiful porcelain complexion, and this is all down to the way in which she is extremely diligent about staying out of the sun. Kidman avoids direct sunlight as much as possible, and, whenever she does need to be outdoors, she always applies plenty of sunscreen. Since the sun is responsible for up to 90% of all facial wrinkles, this dedication to sun protection is key when it comes to maintaining a smooth and youthful complexion.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon has starred in multiple movies, and does not seem to have aged very much at all. While many may think that this is down to a complex skin care routine, Witherspoon’s skin regime is actually extremely simple. Rather than using a multitude of different products, Witherspoon’s secret is a hydrating moisturizer, which she re-applies throughout the day, especially before applying any makeup on to her skin.

Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller is known for her fashion style, as well as for her youthful looks. While she does use a wide range of skin care products, Miller’s number one tip for aging gracefully is to ensure that you are getting enough sleep. The time during which your body is asleep is when your skin, and the rest of your body, works to heal and regenerate, which is why sufficient sleep is essential when it comes to slowing down the aging process.

Aging can be tricky to deal with, especially since everybody ages in their own individual way. However, by making use of each of these celebrity anti-aging tips, you will be able to significantly slow down your aging process, and keep your youthful looks around for years to come.

HEALING SCARS ON YOUR FACE AND BODY

Woman wearing towel

When the skin experiences an injury, scars are usually an inevitable aftermath. For those with younger skin, scars tend to fade quite quickly, but those with more mature skin may end up with severe scars that last for years, unless you give one of these healing methods a try.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that is a natural healer, especially when it comes to damaged skin and scars. By strengthening the immune system, vitamin C speeds up the healing process, while also restoring collagen levels in the skin, resulting in a flatter and smoother complexion. Vitamin C can be used both orally and topically, and this would be advised if you are seeking out the very best results.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has been used for centuries when it comes to healing the skin, as it not only soothes it but also helps to regenerate any damaged tissue. There are multiple studies that point to how effective aloe vera is when it comes to healing wounds and scars, and has even been shown to be able to completely remove scars. The best way to use aloe vera is by applying the gel to your skin directly from the leaf, but, if you cannot find the plant anywhere, it is usually easy to find pure aloe vera in stores. Simply apply it to any scars and leave it on for at least half an hour. By doing this two to three times a day, you will not only notice your scars soon beginning to fade, but your skin will also take on a much healthier glow.

Massages

Once your injury has healed and only the scar is left behind, give this area a gentle massage a few times a day. Scars contain dense bands of collagen beneath them, but massaging helps to break these down. Simply apply some lotion to the area and gently massage it in a circular motion for around 30 seconds.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for so many different processes within the body, from collagen production to DNA repair, meaning that it is vital when it comes to the formation of scar tissue, as well as the healing of the skin. Studies have shown that when the skin experiences an injury, the area becomes flooded with zinc in the first 90 minutes, as zinc is hugely responsible for the healing process. Zinc can be taken as a supplement, but make sure that you double check the dosage beforehand, as overdosing on zinc can be quite dangerous.

Although scars do usually fade on their own most of the time, there is no harm in trying to speed up their healing process. From topical vitamin C and aloe vera to zinc supplements, these tips will have you on your way to smooth and clear skin in no time at all.

SKIN CARE TIPS BEFORE DATE NIGHT

Woman lying sideways on a mattress

If you have a date night coming back, then it is likely that you want your skin to be sporting a beautiful, radiant glow. Rather than turning to makeup for a quick fix, here are a few tips that will help you to have your skin looking its very best just in time for date night.

Exfoliate the Night Before

While you may want to leave the exfoliation to just a couple of hours before your date, it would be best to exfoliate the night before, as this will give your skin some time to calm down and regenerate. No matter which method of exfoliation you prefer, make sure that you apply a thick layer of moisturizer as soon as you are done, as exfoliation leaves your skin quite vulnerable, and the moisturizer will offer some added protection.

Invest in a Primer

If you are planning on wearing makeup for your date night, which most women do, then investing in a quality primer is a great idea. Primers are designed to be applied onto the face after a moisturizer, but before any makeup, and create a blank canvas onto which your makeup can grip. This then allows your makeup to last for so much longer, and prevents any unsightly smudges. Try to look for a primer that also contains a wide range of antioxidants, as this will give your skin a healthy boost at the same time.

A Hydrating Face Mask

If you tend to suffer from dry or dehydrated skin, then a hydrating face mask is one of the best ways to nourish your skin before date night. These contain powerful active ingredients that penetrate the skin’s layers and inject it with a dose of hydration, leaving skin looking fresh and plump afterwards. Hydrating from within is also important, so try to increase your water consumption a few days before date night.

The Eye Area

Everybody wants their eyes to be sparkling on date night, which means that you need to tackle any dark shadows or under-eye circles. The best way to do this is with an eye serum or cream, preferably one that contains the active ingredients needed to target your specific issues. Simply apply a small amount to the skin around your eyes, before applying your moisturizer, and this will help to smooth out any fine lines, while brightening the entire area.

If you usually tend to take quite a while preparing for date night, do not forget that a large amount of your date night skin care can be done the day before. From exfoliation to face masks, these steps can be carried out in advance, leaving you with plenty of time to spend on choosing outfits, hairstyles and more.

SKIN CARE TIPS DURING PREGNANCY

Pregnant Woman standing in an Orchard

When a woman is pregnant, her body goes through so many different hormonal changes, which, of course, have quite the effect on the skin. While every woman reacts differently to these changes, here are some skin care tips to ensure that you are able to maintain your beautiful glow, all the way through your pregnancy.

Drink Plenty of Water

While drinking water is essential even if you are not pregnant, it becomes even more important if you are. Water really helps to filter and clear away all of the toxins from within your body, while maintaining the correct amount of amniotic fluid. Try to drink at least two litres of water a day, as this is the optimum amount for both you and your baby.

Pay Attention to Ingredients

Unless you purchase skin care products that are completely natural and organic, then it is likely that your standard skin care products contain ingredients that could be harmful to your baby. With everything from your shampoo and shower gel to your moisturizer and eye cream, you need to pay extra attention to the ingredients that these formulas contain, doing a bit of research into each one to ensure that they are safe for your baby. Alternatively, speak to your doctor about the best products and ingredients to use during this time.

Avoid the Sun

All of the hormonal fluctuations that you will experience during pregnancy will make your skin so much more sensitive, and therefore far more prone to pigmentation and dark patches. The sun exacerbates this even more, and can also make any dark patches take much longer to fade away, so try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Whether you are trying to treat pigmentation or looking for a new exfoliation method, alpha hydroxy acids are amongst some of the safest ingredients to use while pregnant. They are completely natural, with glycolic acid, which is derived from sugarcane, and lactic acid, which comes from milk, being two of the most effective. Products that contain a combination of both of these ingredients are best, as they complement each other really well.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that is safe to use during pregnancy, and is also extremely potent. This ingredient is great for brightening up the skin, which is ideal for those who are looking quite drained out during pregnancy. In addition to using topical products that contain the antioxidant, try to also consume plenty of foods that are high in vitamin C, as this will give your body a boost from both the inside as well as the outside.

Pregnancy can be quite a complicated time, and, since everybody’s skin reacts differently, you will not quite know what you will experience until it actually happens. Whether your skin has become oilier, or you have started to notice dark patches appearing, these tips will help you to care for your skin in ways that are perfectly safe for your baby.
